The Role
This is a contract role for a Freelance Industrial Designer located in Austin, TX. The Industrial Designer will be responsible for product research, product design, and prototype mock-up for a product in the small/exotic pets enclosure category. Additionally, the contract will extend through the design for manufacturing and mass production phase, where inputs from the designer will be critical to ensure a consistent design language. The role is primarily remote with option to meet face-to-face with industry experts in person.
About the Project
This is an independent project led by a seasoned Austin-based Entrepreneur who has shipped 10+ physical products across various D2C channels. The ideal candidate will be someone who is interested in entrepreneurship and growing their involvement in the project post-contract. This will be an excellent position for candidates interested in being exposed to the entire concept to production lifecycle of consumer technology products.
Responsibilities
There is no one-size-fit-all formula for creating good design. This is a general guideline of expected deliverables for the project. Your input on the process is valuable.
- Research and understand target user market, with input from species-specific experts
- Create multiple sketch concepts and iterate based on feedback
- Develop initial 3D designed CAD of consumer product with focus on form aesthetics, physical user experience, manufacture-ability, and cost
- Creation renders of 3D model in a home environment pre-product for market validation
- Iterate product as needed based on user feedback.
- Work closely with project lead to fine-tune design as needed during manufacturing.

- Shipping physical products to market
- Pet enclosures/supplies/toys
- Indoor décor space, interior design experience
- Device with electronic components, lighting, heating
Compensation
Exact compensation is dependent on final project scope. Payment will be rendered for each phase of the project with tangible deliverables established in contract.
