Role Description

The Mid-Weight Product Designer role is a full-time, hybrid position based in St Kilda, VIC.

The designer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to conceptualize, design, and refine toys and product ranges from brief through to production. Day-to-day responsibilities include translating brand and product strategies into compelling visual concepts, developing prototypes, conducting user and play pattern research, and iterating designs based on feedback and testing. The role involves preparing design specifications and documentation for manufacturing partners, ensuring designs meet safety, quality, and cost requirements. The designer will contribute to continuous improvement of ToyMonster’s product design standards and support the art, marketing, and engineering teams with design assets and presentations.

What you will be doing:

  • Conduct trend, competitor and consumer research to identify new product and play opportunities.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging toy, entertainment, fashion and lifestyle trends.
  • Develop creative and commercially viable concepts from initial ideation, through to production.
  • Design engaging, age-appropriate products that balance play value, innovation, aesthetics and cost.
  • Create concept sketches, detailed drawings, 3D models and presentation-ready product visuals.
  • Present concepts clearly and confidently to internal stakeholders, retailers and licensing partners.
  • Respond constructively to feedback and adapt designs without losing sight of the original creative vision.
  • Translate creative concepts into technically achievable designs suitable for manufacturing.
  • Apply an understanding of plastics, fabrics, mechanisms, manufacturing processes and toy construction.
  • Design with relevant child safety standards, durability and age-grading requirements in mind.
  • Prepare accurate specifications, technical drawings, colour, material and finish details, and product documentation.
  • Identify practical cost-saving opportunities while protecting the product’s key features and overall design intent.
  • Work closely with Product Design, Product Management, Graphic Design, Engineering and Marketing teams throughout development.
  • Collaborate with our sourcing team to review samples, resolve technical challenges and refine products for production.
  • Review prototypes, tooling samples and production samples, providing clear and actionable feedback.
  • Travel overseas, primarily to China, at key stages of product development to review samples, work directly with factories and support product approvals.
  • Conduct hands-on reviews of prototypes, tooling samples and production samples while overseas, resolving design and manufacturing issues directly with factories.
  • Be available to undertake multiple overseas trips each year, sometimes arranged around factory sampling schedules and project requirements.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting key development milestones and deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Product and visual design skills, including Product Design and Visual Design, with a portfolio demonstrating toy, consumer product, or industrial design work.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Product Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, or a related discipline.
  • Comfort working from concept to production, including prototyping, specifying materials, and collaborating with manufacturers (experience with Asia-based production is beneficial).
  • Excellent presentation and visual communication skills, with the ability to communicate product ideas clearly and confidently.
  • Exceptional proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Strong CAD skills using your preferred industry-standard 3D modelling software.
  • Awareness of emerging AI tools and a willingness to use them to support ideation, visualisation and more efficient ways of working.
  • Advanced hand-sketching skills, with the ability to communicate concepts, construction details and design solutions quickly and clearly.
  • A sound understanding of materials, manufacturing processes and product construction, particularly plastics, fabrics and toy mechanisms.
  • Excellent attention to detail across concept development, specifications, sample reviews and final production.
  • Proven creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance design ambition, manufacturing feasibility, safety and cost.
  • Effective time-management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the confidence to work across internal teams, overseas factories, retailers and licensing partners.
  • Attention to detail, understanding of toy safety and compliance standards, and an interest in children’s entertainment, play trends, and emerging toy categories.
