About this role

Company: Carbelim Private Limited

Location: Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

Employment: Full-time

Experience: Preferably 4–8 years in physical product development

About CarbelimCarbelim is an IIT Madras incubated and invested deep climate-tech startup developing microalgae-based carbon capture, air purification and environmental monitoring solutions for homes, offices, industries and public infrastructure.

Role OverviewWe are looking for a hands-on product designer and mechanical engineer who can own development from initial concept to production-ready design.

The portfolio includes standalone air purifiers, AC/HVAC-integrated purification modules, home and office appliances, industrial air-treatment systems, and handheld air-quality monitoring devices.

Our development approach is concept → CAD → 3D-printed prototype → functional testing → design refinement → tooling/mould development → pilot production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate product requirements into practical concepts, sketches, industrial designs and detailed 3D CAD models.
  • Design product appearance, enclosures, internal layouts, mounting arrangements and service access.
  • Integrate fans, filters, sensors, electronics, displays, wiring and microalgae modules where applicable.
  • Develop airflow paths, ducting, sealing and filter arrangements, considering pressure drop, noise, vibration and thermal management.
  • Design purification modules for integration with AC/HVAC equipment, coordinating with refrigeration and electrical specialists.
  • Prepare designs for 3D printing; coordinate prototype fabrication, assembly and fit checks.
  • Build and refine functional prototypes with Carbelim’s electronics, biotechnology and engineering teams.
  • Plan and document testing for airflow, assembly, usability, leakage, noise and maintainability.
  • Select suitable materials and manufacturing processes, including injection moulding, sheet metal, extrusion and machining.
  • Prepare mould-ready designs with appropriate wall thickness, draft angles, ribs, bosses, tolerances and parting considerations.
  • Coordinate with mould makers and manufacturing vendors on tooling feasibility, quotations, trials and corrections.
  • Create engineering drawings, bills of materials, assembly instructions and controlled design revisions.
  • Support pilot production and resolve manufacturing issues through production handover.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Product Design or a related discipline.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion 360, CATIA or equivalent 3D CAD software.
  • Proven experience developing physical products beyond visual renders.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing, prototype assembly and design iteration.
  • Knowledge of plastic enclosure design, injection moulding, sheet-metal fabrication and design for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Ability to produce detailed drawings, tolerance specifications and bills of materials.
  • Experience coordinating with tooling suppliers, fabricators and component vendors.
  • Strong understanding of ergonomics, assembly, durability and serviceability.

Preferred Experience

  • Air purifiers, HVAC products, home appliances, environmental instruments or industrial equipment.
  • Fan selection, filtration systems, airflow analysis and acoustic optimisation.
  • Integration of mechanical assemblies with electronic controls and sensors.
  • Products involving liquids, pumps, tubing, seals or leak-resistant enclosures.
  • Taking at least one product through tooling and pilot or commercial production.

Expected Initial Deliverables

  • Product requirements and concept options for the first assigned device.
  • Complete CAD assembly and preliminary bill of materials.
  • A 3D-printed enclosure prototype for form, fit and assembly validation.
  • A functional prototype and documented design improvements.
  • A manufacturing-ready design package following prototype validation.

Tooling and final mould development will proceed after prototype testing and design approval.

Candidate ProfileYou should be comfortable working in a startup environment, building prototypes personally, resolving engineering issues and coordinating specialist inputs. We need someone who combines strong product aesthetics with practical manufacturing knowledge.
